Thanks to Iowa Public Television, the Jefferson public library has new resources available to help build early literacy and math skills, including a Library Corner.
Stacie Steveson, Iowa Public Television representative, presented a Peg + Cat Story Time, which introduced this new space to children and their families. Peg + Cat was originally created to inspire preschoolers’ natural curiosity about math and help them develop new skills and strategies for solving problems creatively in their daily lives. Special guest appearances by Peg + Cat were the highlight of the morning with hugs and high fives for all.
The Library Corner is filled with PBS KIDS DVDs, Martha Speaks Read Aloud books and resources, a bright, colorful banner and rug featuring PBS KIDS characters. A large Peg + Cat standing character welcome children to this area.
Online resources include PBS KIDS Lab, a website with more than 140 games and hands-on activities that help to build early math and literacy skills. The IPTV Library Corners are part of Iowa Public Television’s Ready for School initiative which works with Iowa communities to strengthen the math and literacy skills of children ages 2-8.
“When you open a book for your child and share it in reading, you’re making it possible for your child to imagine and discover. Families reading together for 20 minutes a day, seven days a week, get more than 121 hours of bonding time every year. By making books a part of your daily routine, you’re setting the stage for future success in school, work and life,” an IPTV spokesperson said.
Children’s Librarian Terry Clark said, “We invite everyone to visit the Library Corner. It is a wonderful asset for the children’s department and a great space for families to spend time reading together.”
